Monterey nestles along an expansive bay, about 100 miles south of San Francisco on California's picturesque Central Coast. For the rest of the year, visitors are free to take self-guided walking tours, but will still need to obtain free permits. It may sound like a pretty long hike, but it isnt all that difficult. Old Fisherman's Wharf is 10 minutes' drive away. To get the most out of the stops from San Francisco to Monterey, and have enough time to do all the things in Monterey, I recommend spending a night or two down there. Not only will this make it so much easier to find what you need, but it will also lead to more space in your trunk for you to pack other necessities.
